We thought this was the moment of the woman, but apparently it’s BUTTS that are having a moment all of their very own. It is, really, even Vogue says so, calling it the “official era of the big booty.”
As if the overexposure seen at last month’s VMA’s and the Nicki Minaj Anaconda video weren’t enough, Jennifer Lopez and Iggy Azalea have released Booty, a new song and video in which for four minutes the pop stars shake, gyrate and grind their derrieres all in celebration of the big BUTT.
Of course, just like with breasts, we’re inundated with “perfect”, unrealistic and airbrushed versions of the booty so, we were thrilled to come across the Unretouched Butts Project by the fashion blog Refinery29. Although still missing a bit of butt diversity for our taste, we love their mission…
Here at R29, we support and cherish all butts – from the au courant round booty to the pancake-ier shape that has fallen by the cultural wayside. From cellulite, stretch marks, and age spots to the perkiest of young butts, we believe they all deserve to have an “official era.” And, that era should be all the time.
To that end, we photographed the butts of 30 women. And, we asked how they feel about their backsides — what they love, what they think is funny, and whether or not Vogue’s “radical” acceptance of bodies larger than a sample size has affected their lives.
