Last Wednesday, beloved and pioneering television actress Mary Tyler Moore died at the age of 80. Tributes were posted all over social media, and renewed interest started to swirl around this 21-year-old video of Joan Jett & the Blackhearts performing their rockin’ cover of “Love is All Around” – The Mary Tyler Moore Show theme song – on The Late Show with David Letterman.
The band released their version of the sitcom theme in 1996, and it reached No. 8 on Billboard‘s Bubbling Under Hot 100 chart. Following Moore’s passing, frontwoman and rock pioneer Joan Jett issued a statement to Billboard about the influence the iconic actress and show had on her. “I grew up watching The Mary Tyler Moore Show. I was inspired that women were shown as being equal to men and it had an influence on me as I became a musician. The show was groundbreaking, important and funny. I will miss Mary Tyler Moore.”
The Mary Tyler Moore Show, which debuted on CBS in 1970 and ran until 1977, was hailed “as the first modern woman’s sitcom” and is still one of the most acclaimed TV programs in US television history.
Love is All Around Lyrics
Who can turn the world on with her smile?
Who can take a nothing day, and suddenly make it all seem worthwhile?
Well it’s you girl, and you should know it
With each glance and every little movement you show it
Love is all around, no need to waste it
You can have a town, why don’t you take it
You’re gonna make it after all
You’re gonna make it after all
How will you make it on your own?
This world is awfully big, girl this time you’re all alone
But it’s time you started living
It’s time you let someone else do some giving
Love is all around, no need to waste it
You can have a town, why don’t you take it
You’re gonna make it after all
You’re gonna make it after all
