We’re heading back to Monterey! Big Little Lies, the award-winning HBO series based on Liane Moriarty’s bestselling book, is back for season two.

Premiering in June, the seven-episode drama will continue to “explore the malignancy of lies, the durability of friendships, the fragility of marriage and, of course, the vicious ferocity of sound parenting. Multiple characters will be dealing with Perry’s death, and the prospect of moving past a life-altering event. In short: Things could get messy.” We’re in!

While Moriarty didn’t write a second Big Little Lies novel, this new season is based on a “novella/template” she wrote and provided to creator David E. Kelley and the lead cast members for interpretation.

In a statement about the series, executive producer Reese Witherspoon says, “It gives us the opportunity to delve deeper into the lives of these intriguing and intricate Monterey families and bring more of their stories back to the audience who embraced and championed them.”

Original cast members Reese Witherspoon (Madeline MacKenzie), Nicole Kidman (Celeste Wright), Shailene Woodley (Jane Chapman), Laura Dern (Renata Klein), Zoë Kravitz (Bonnie Carlson), Adam Scott (Ed Mackenzie), James Tupper (Nathan Carlson), Gordon Klein (Jeffrey Nordling), Kathryn Newton (Abigail Carlson), Iain Armitage (Ziggy Chapman), Robin Weigert (Dr. Amanda Reisman), Merrin Dungey (Detective Adrienne Quinlan), and Sarah Sokolovic (Tori Bachman) are all returning. We are particularly excited to see that Meryl Streep has joined the cast as Celeste’s mother-in-law, which will definitely up the drama ante. The series is being directed by renowned filmmaker, Andrea Arnold.

If you missed season 1, you can watch now for free, no HBO subscription required.
