On the Barbie hiking boot heels* of announcing that its annual cookie program is going digital for the 2015 selling season, the Girl Scouts are also bringing three new cookie varieties into the offering mix, two of which are gluten free.
Jockeying to knock the ever-popular Thin Mints out of their top-selling cookie slot are newcomers Rah-Rah Raisins (whole grain oatmeal cookies packed with plump raisins and Greek yogurt-flavored chunks), along with two gluten-free options: Toffee-tastic (rich, buttery cookies with sweet, crunchy golden toffee bits) and Trios (real peanut butter and whole grain oatmeal cookies with chocolate chips).
Will any of the newbies be as popular as classics like Samoas, Peanut Butter Tagalaongs, Do-si-dos, and Trefoils? The cookie buying/eating jury is still out on that. But with a total of 12 cookies in the 2015 lineup the Girl Scouts have made their fundraising confections easier to buy and sell this season with the addition of two different digital technology platforms.
The new Digital Cookie is designed to help take the 5 essential life skills girls learn through the traditional cookie program to a whole new level – introducing critical lessons about online marketing, application use, and ecommerce to more than one million Girl Scouts, in real-time. Because “the girls always initiate the cookie sale,” participating scouts will have their own personalized cookie selling websites that they can invite customers to visit, via email, to place their orders. Other girls will take in-person orders using a unique mobile app designed specifically for Girl Scouts. Once a Girl Scout initiates a Digital Cookie sale, the customer will be able to pay by credit card, and opt to have his or her cookies shipped or delivered by a Girl Scout.
On the buying side there’s the Cookie Finder app that makes supporting Girl Scouts and getting your cookie fix just a touch screen click away. Install the free app on your iOS or Android phone or mobile device, press “Find Cookies Now!” and voilà… it will instantly spit back the cookie booth closest to you (including the time, date and location of the sale).
Let the cookie selling, buying, and dunking begin!
