One of our most favorite WYSKy illustrators, Kimothy Joy has released her first book, That’s What She Said: Wise Words from Influential Women.
An artist and activist committed to the empowerment of women and girls, Kimothy has created a gorgeous illustrated volume, blending her signature watercolor style and hand-lettered quotes, along with short biographies to showcase the contributions of more than fifty influential female leaders “whose words and actions are a passionate call to arms”.
“This book was a personal project I began post-election night after feeling completely gutted that our nation wasn’t ready for its first female president,” Kimothy shares. “I thought of my mother, Merri Louise Asebedo, my muse and inspiration for what it meant to be a strong, phenomenal woman. Then I began thinking of other women who have come before us, who spoke their truths and stood tall in the face of unsurmountable circumstances. I began painting their portraits and words. It was my therapy. And the process of spending time each day with them gave me a renewed sense of strength and hope – strength and hope that I knew I had to share with other women and the world, immediately.”
And we are so grateful that she did.
That’s What She Said honors a powerful and diverse group of women including Maya Angelou, Gloria Steinem, Virginia Woolf, Sojourner Truth, Malala Yousafzai, and Ruth Bader Ginsburg. “Role models whose words and insights remind us that we must never give up the fight for a more just and equitable society.”
In celebration of the book release, Kimothy has given Women You Should Know one signed copy, which is up for grabs!
