Emily Heller writes jokes for the internet and sometimes says them into a microphone. Often putting her talents to work as a freelancer for CollegeHumor, she’s also the woman behind “If Disney Princesses Had Moms,” a series of 5 comics that puts a hilarious, maternal spin on the classic storylines of Ariel, Jasmine, Belle, Pocahontas and Cinderella.
While the panels speak for themselves, we went digging for the back story and had the opportunity to connect with Emily about how she dreamed up her brilliant idea. She told WYSK, “I felt like a lot of dads in Disney movies reacted really irrationally and like they didn’t understand how teenage girls work. I thought that (in general) moms just have their shit together better when it comes to dealing with daughters.”
With that, she pitched her “If Disney Princesses Had Moms” idea to CollegeHumor and they liked it. So after Emily crafted the final copy for each panel, the editors sent her work to visual development artist, Amy Kim, who Emily says, “illustrated it out of the park.”
