Co-directed by journalists Nora Poggi and Insiyah Saeed, She Started It is a documentary film about the rise of women technology entrepreneurs in the US and Europe.

It is estimated that women have formed only 3% of all tech start-ups, and that women run only 4% of fortune 500 companies. In Silicon Valley, women receive less than 10% of all VC funding (Kauffman Foundation). She Started It is on a mission for change.

“By showcasing these role models, we hope that young women will aspire to become entrepreneurs and consider careers in tech.”

Shot on location in Silicon Valley, San Francisco, NYC and Europe, the film highlights the stories of Agathe Molinar, Stacey Ferreira, Brienne Ghafourifar and Thuy Truong. Four young women founders working on a variety of technology projects, from mobile apps to fashion start-ups to a password-storing online platform. The film also includes interviews with veteran experts and other industry role models who share their perspectives on the issues women face in tech.

As explained by the filmmakers, “The goal of the film is to inspire young women to become entrepreneurs and consider careers in tech, and also educate them about how to sustain that career. We believe that a visual connection is a powerful one; by depicting the day-to-day lives of our subjects on film we hope to inform and inspire others. In our research we realized that many women feel they do not have what it takes to start a tech company, and even more so build the next billion-dollar company. We believe that women can start a company and aim even higher if they believe it possible! Our goal is to create that spark, that by watching we would get someone to say, if she can do it, I can do it!”

She Started It is supported by the Thiel Fellowship, Luxr, See Jane Invest and Girls Innovate. The filmmakers also recently completed a successful crowdfunding campaign, raising 173% of their goal.
