This past Sunday, on International Women’s Day, Microsoft showed their support for young girls who like science and engineering with the launch of a new ad.

The delightful young women featured in the video talk about their incredible accomplishments, while also sharing some of the challenges they face in pursing their passion.

Sadly, although 7 out of 10 girls are interested in science, only 2 out of 10 will pursue it as a career, making this message both timely and important.

“[Girls] might really love science, but they might be … afraid people might think, ‘Oh, don’t boys do that? That’s a boy thing.'”

Microsoft telling young girls that STEM careers are viable and worthy is a good thing, and it’s certainly a step in the right direction for a company whose workforce is only about 17% women. Let’s hope they continue to invest in changing the ratio.
