It’s not often that when we think of heavy metal music we think of a Burqa-wearing Muslim woman shredding it up, but thrash guitarist Gisele Marie Rocha is doing just that.

For this 42-year-old from Sao Paulo, Brazil, playing heavy metal music isn’t just a hobby, it’s her passion and career. Until recently, Gisele was fronting her brother’s heavy metal band Spectrus, and is now working on her new band’s first album, which is scheduled to be released in 2016.

Born into a German Catholic family, Gisele converted to Islam in 2009 and has been challenging stereotypes about Muslim women ever since.

“Islam is just my religion, music is my profession. People do not expect to see a Muslim woman who uses a Burqa, practices the religion properly, and is a professional guitarist who plays in a heavy metal band, so many people are shocked by it. I am here to demolish your prejudgments.”
