Congratulations to high school senior Arantza Peña Popo, who was announced as the winner of the US 2019 Doodle for Google national competition.
This year’s contest theme was “When I grow up, I hope…” Arantza’s illustration, entitled Once you get it, give it back features a framed picture of her mother carrying Arantza as a baby, which was inspired by a real painting in her house. And below it, is Arantza, caring for her mom when she’s older in the future.
“When I grow up, I hope to care for my mom as much as she cared for me my entire life,” Arantza shared in an interview on Jimmy Fallon. “She’s made so many sacrifices for me, so I wanted to show me paying it back to her.”

Chosen from more than 200,000 entries, Arantza’s illustration was featured on Google’s homepage reaching millions of users. Additionally, she received a $30k college scholarship and the high school in Georgia where Arantza recently graduated from, will receive a $50k tech package.
Arantza started drawing when she was three years old and wants to publish alternative graphic novels and comics in the future. She graduated as valedictorian of Arabia Mountain High School in DeKalb County, Georgia, and will be attending the University of Southern California in the Fall.
Way to go Arantza!!
