In this episode of Sally Hubbard’s Women Killing It! podcast, hear how Kristen Pressner, the Global Head of Human Resources for Roche Diagnostics and a fierce champion of women in the workplace, uses what she calls the ‘Flip It To Test It’ challenge as a way for us all to become aware of our own biases.
“We see men as taking charge, and women as taking care… We internalize these things and have ideas of how women should be… We, even as women, are subject to these same biases. None of us is immune.”
Kristen, who supports 35,000 employees across more than 150 countries worldwide, gave a TEDx talk entitled, “Are You Biased? I Am,” telling of her surprising discovery of her own gender bias. When a male employee and a female employee both asked to review their compensation within the same week, Kristen’s initial reaction to the man was, “Yeah, I’ll look into it,” and her initial reaction to the woman was, “I’m pretty sure you’re good.” Kristen was startled when she realized her unconscious bias against the female employee, especially given that Kristen herself is the breadwinner for her family.

Kristen took a major leap in her career and personal life to move her family to Basel, Switzerland. She later overcame her hesitation to go for a huge new job opportunity after one trusted colleague encouraged her.
“In terms of releasing latent potential, women are a great investment because it really takes very little to light a woman on fire. I think we can undo this unconscious stuff that’s happening in her brain that’s holding her back, keeping something from really being released, and it really takes such a small intervention.”
