Freelance illustrator Ellen Crenshaw loves telling stories through pictures and she does just that in her newest series, “We Are Entitled To Wear Cowboy Boots To Our Own Revolution,” which features some of our favorite WYSKy women and their words of wisdom.
Working with The Nib, Ellen was given a variety of feminist women and quotes to choose from. She selected more than a dozen to illustrate, picking quotes that resonated with her and highlighted the importance of feminism and equality, while also making sure the women depicted were diverse and came from different backgrounds.
The series includes Aung San Suu Kyi, bell hooks, Bette Davis, Beyonce Knowles, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Coretta Scott King, Faith Ringgold, Jessica Valenti, Gertrude Stein, Ida B. Wells, Jane Goodall, Malala Yousafzai, Naomi Wolf, Laverne Cox, Leymah Gbowee, Maya Lin, Shirley Chisholm, Rebecca West, Sojourner Truth, Virgina Apgar and Dolores Huerta.
Ellen infuses feminism into much of her work. She told WYSK, “I am a woman after all, and my point-of-view will always be in my work. I’m more inclined to depict a woman in a position of power or filling a role that traditionally is held by a man (or conversely, I’m also more inclined to depict a man in a traditionally feminine role). I can’t pretend that I’m a feminist scholar—feminism as a movement has only gotten my attention in the last several years—but I feel that I’ve always inherently supported feminist values.
Here are just a few of our favorites; you can view the entire series here.
