Almost 50 years ago, singer/songwriter Lesley Gore’s song You Don’t Own Me hit the airwaves and became the feminist anthem of its time. Well, she’s back with a bunch of her friends to remind us that midterm elections matter, and women’s rights are a critical concern this Election Day.
“We have to vote like our futures are on the line, because they are.”
In 2013, there were more laws passed restricting women’s rights than in the entire previous decade. In the video, the former 1960’s teen idol says, “It’s hard for me to believe but we’re still fighting for the same things we were then. Yes, ladies, we’ve got to come together and get out there and vote and protect our bodies. They’re ours. Please vote.”
The You Don’t Own Me PSA was the brainchild of director, performer and activist Sarah Sophie Flicker. Special appearances include Lena Dunham, Tavi Gevinson, Rain Phoenix, Alexa Chung, Carrie Brownstein, Natasha Lyonne, Tracee Ellis Ross, etc.
